Our Operations Support Officers (OSOs) have minimal prisoner contact and conduct x-ray screening, search visitors upon entry, work in the prison property area, operate the prison control room, monitor CCTV and support key administrative prison functions.

Correctional Officers: 3 days a week | 12.5-hour shifts | Mix of weekdays, nights, weekends & public holidays.

Operations Support Officers: Mainly 3 a week with12.5-hour shifts* | Mix of weekdays, nights, weekends & public holidays.
*Please note that approximately once a month our OSOs will work Mon to Fri business hours for a week, in the prison property area, the rest of the time they will work the roster listed above.

Correctional Officers: $30.46 p/h ($60,351 p.a.) for training | $37.50 p/h ($74,299 p.a.) during year one | $40.56 p/h ($80,326 p.a.) once fully accredited.

Operations Support Officers: $35.54 p/h ($70,416 p.a.).

Both roles receive regular pay increases and receive 7 weeks of annual leave for working shift work.

Your Virtual Job Preview doesn’t replace a face-to-face interview. If it goes well, your recruiter will still organise for you to have a face-to-face interview - and if you secure the job, the time you invest now will help you settle in.

On your first day, you will meet the other recruits and your squad leaders, who will guide and support you through the training program. You’ll meet the General Manager of the prison and other support functions who will explain their roles, how they will support you during your career, our vision and values and how you fit in.

The first portion of your training is classroom based and will give you the foundational knowledge of the corrections system, the prison environment and the kinds of tasks and duties a Correctional Officer does. After the classroom training, you will spend time shadowing experienced staff on the floor and learning how the prison works.

Correctional Officers: 9 weeks total (4 weeks of classroom & 5 weeks of job shadowing). Training will include defensive tactics training, which runs for 8 hours over 3 days. You will also enrol to complete your Cert 3 in Correctional Practice over your first 12 months.

Operations Support Officers: 8 weeks total (3 weeks of classroom & 5 weeks of job shadowing). Training will not include defensive tactics training, but will include self defence training.

At this stage there will be another intake for Mount Gambier prison in early 2025, however this is subject to change.
