At the District Court of Western Australia and Central Law Courts, we operate two custody centres to manage people on trial and overnight arrests.

We provide operational support in courts and also assist with site monitoring. As well as ensuring reception and checkpoints are secure, we operate control rooms with security management systems.

The role of a Court & Custody Officer

Court and Custody Officers have a great deal of variety - you may be ensuring courtroom safety in a trial one day and then escorting persons in custody the next.

You'll assist with the management and movement of people in custody throughout the facility, conduct patrols in and around the facility, control room monitoring, provide front-of-house reception and customer service, conduct court screening, provide security during court sessions and prepare a variety of reports.

Remuneration

Our Court and Custody Officers work part-time, working a maximum of 30 hours a week, receiving the following rates:

A training rate of $36.62 p/h for your first 6 months, increasing to $38.53 p/h after 6 months

Roster

This is a part-time role, and you'll work a maximum 30 hours per week. There are no weekends or nights, and you'll work Mon–Fri between 7.30 am–6 pm on a rotating roster.

The recruitment process

What to expect on the first day

On the first day of the Initial Training Course (ITC), new G4S Court Security and Custody Officers can expect a warm welcome from the Contract Lead and Operations Manager.

This will be followed by an overview of the court system and expectations for the role.

Trainees will then be given a tour of the Central Law Courts and District Court Building to familiarize themselves with the working environment.

Finally, there will be a small activity for trainees to get to know each other.

What training is provided?

G4S provides 6 weeks of full-time paid training for Court Security & Custody Officer roles at the District Court Building in Perth. This training, called the Initial Training Course (ITC), can sometimes extend into a 7th week. Training runs Monday through Friday, with one Saturday dedicated to defensive tactics. Upon successful completion of the ITC, trainees become fully trained Court Security and Custody Officers.

The ITC follows a structured format:

Week 1 & 2: Classroom-style training.
Week 3 & 4: Mix of classroom-style and on-the-job training.
Week 5 & 6: Mix of on-the-job training and a tactical operations course.
