Most Court Security Officers work between 8:30-4:30 pm Monday to Friday and don't work weekends or public holidays. During non-sitting days where no court matters are being heard, they can also take advantage of reduced hours and take annual leave.

Within the Melbourne Central Business District and other headquarters in Victoria, some courts may be required to extend their hours of operation beyond the above-mentioned times. To satisfy the needs of the courts, opportunities to undertake night court and/or weekend duties may be available and penalty rates are payable.

Court Security Officers (CSOs) are covered by the Security Services Industry Award (SSIA). Full-time and part-time officers are paid $27.42 per hour and casual officers are paid $34.28 per hour.

CSOs are also entitled to annual leave, personal leave, and various other supplementary benefits, such as travel allowances and food allowances where applicable.

On your first day you can expect a warm welcome from your supervisor, they will guide you through a comprehensive site induction. This induction will cover all the necessary protocols, procedures and safety measures that you need to be aware of to carry out your duties effectively.

During the induction, you will also have the opportunity to meet the rest of your team, who will provide you with the necessary guidance and support throughout your training. Your induction training program will consist of a blend of online learning and practical on-the-job training, designed to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in your role.

Depending on the needs of the court, you may begin your first day with some online learning or shadowing a team member on the floor. At the end of your first day, you will have the opportunity to debrief with your supervisor, who will be available to answer any questions you may have.

The induction program for the Court Security Officer role can span up to three months and is designed to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of your responsibilities, the workings of the courts, and the crucial role that Court Security Officers play in fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all court users. The training regimen is a blended learning approach that encompasses online modules and on-the-job work-integrated learning.

Throughout the training, you will be enrolled into a modern learning platform which contains online assessments and relevant materials which can be accessed by a tablet or computer. Additionally, you will receive personalised one-on-one instructions from a supervisor at a court facility, who will guide and support you through your on-the-job training. Your supervisors and mentors are seasoned professionals with a deep understanding of the court facility's standard operating procedures, and they will offer guidance and coaching as you navigate your training.

As part of your on-the-job training, you will undertake nationally-recognised short courses covering the use of batons, handcuffs, and screening and x-ray technology. You will receive extensive instruction on the proper use of these tools and technologies to ensure that you can carry out your duties confidently and safely. Once you have demonstrated the necessary competencies, you will be asked to affirm your commitment to performing the duties and responsibilities of a Court Security Officer. Following this, you will be authorised under the Court Security Act 1980 to undertake your role.

The security contract for Court Services Victoria is divided into 7 distinct regions: Melbourne CBD, Melbourne Metropolitan, Hume, Gippsland, Loddon Mallee, Grampians, and Barwon. As a Court Security Officer, you will be contracted to a specific region and will have the opportunity to work across multiple courts within that region. Most regions typically comprise 3 to 7 different courts, with some regions including more.

As a Court Security Officer, it is essential to be adaptable within your contracted region, as each court environment may present unique challenges that require a flexible approach. This includes being able to quickly familiarise yourself with court procedures, protocols, and security measures that may differ from court to court.
